What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first appointment is the start of a long-term relationship with our practice. When you arrive, our team will check you in, review your paperwork, and confirm your insurance. Dr. Raghuram will then talk with you about your medical history, current glasses or contacts, screen and work habits, and any vision changes or symptoms you have noticed. From there, he performs a comprehensive eye and vision exam that checks your prescription and evaluates the health of your eyes. Before you leave, he explains your results and recommendations in plain language so you know exactly where your eye health stands.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

A little preparation helps your first visit go quickly and gives us a complete picture of your eye health. Please bring:

  • Your current eyeglasses, contact lenses, and contact lens boxes if you have them
  • A list of medications and supplements you take
  • Your vision insurance and medical insurance cards
  • A photo ID
  • Notes about symptoms such as blurry vision, headaches, dryness, or eye strain

To save time at check-in, you can download and complete our new patient form before your appointment. You can also review our payment options and our frequently asked questions.

New Patient FAQs

Are you accepting new patients?

Yes. Spex in the City welcomes new patients of all ages, from children to seniors.

What should I bring to my first eye exam?

Bring your current glasses or contacts, a list of medications, your insurance cards, a photo ID, and notes about any vision changes or symptoms.

Can I fill out paperwork before my visit?

Yes. You can download and print our new patient form from the Online Forms page, then bring it to your appointment or drop it off ahead of time.

How long will my first appointment take?

Most first visits take about 30 to 60 minutes, and contact lens exams may take a bit longer due to the extra measurements and fitting.

Will my eyes be dilated?

Dilation may be recommended to give Dr. Raghuram a clearer view of the retina and optic nerve. If so, your eyes may be light sensitive for a few hours, so sunglasses are helpful.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes. We work with most insurance providers and also accept major credit cards and cash. Our team can help verify your coverage before your visit.

How do I schedule my first appointment?

Call Spex in the City at (206) 526-2020 or submit a request through our online appointment form.
