This place is really great if you’re looking for a real in-person experience, not an impersonal webpage with images of generic frames. I have bought 3 or 4 pairs of glasses from various websites in the past, and yes they were significantly cheaper. However, after getting a pair of glasses from Mario last year, I can say I will never buy online again as long as Spex in the City is in business. For one thing, buying in person means you can try things on, and Mario is great at helping you find frames that really compliment your face (not to mention he’ll gas you up about how good you look in them). The guy has good taste and is a good face-fashion advisor, and his sensibilities, in terms of what glasses look good, are informed by many years of experience. And when disaster struck me today and my frames were run over by a truck, this place was willing to work with me and help me out, and they’re getting me some new ones (god knows I wouldn’t have been able to afford a new pair full price!) And I know everyone says these days that all lenses are the same, come from the same small number of producers or whatever. But I’ve had many pairs of cheap glasses, and glasses from Warby Parker, and none have ever lasted me more than a year before getting scratched to hell and the coatings flake off, or the bridge starting to dissolve where it touches my nose, or the screws inexplicably jettisoning themselves, etc. But when I buy here, I know what I’m getting is good. So if you can afford the premium for a good pair of glasses, believe me it’s worth it. I had to save up for these, but I’m glad I did. Oh, and I get compliments on my frames at least once a week.
